Long Wars
LONG WARS
The purpose of posting this is to show that some wars in recent times do last for decades and therefore it is not out of order to assess longevity of a conflict as being a possible intentional purpose for which the war was started by those who are responsible for doing that.
Guatemalan Civil War (1960–1996): This conflict between the Guatemalan government and various insurgent groups lasted for a brutal 36 years.
Ongoing Afghan Conflict (since 1978/1979): While the specific US war in Afghanistan ran from 2001 to 2021 (nearly 20 years), it was part of a much longer, ongoing series of conflicts in the country that began with the Saur Revolution in 1978 and the subsequent Soviet invasion in 1979. The broader conflict has thus continued for over four decades.
Sudanese Civil Wars: The first Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) lasted 17 years, and the second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005) lasted 22 years. The conflicts between the North and South Sudan spanned several decades in total.
Colombian Conflict (mid-1960s–present): While a peace deal was signed with the FARC rebels in 2016, various other groups remain active, meaning the conflict has lasted well over 50 years in some form.
Karen Conflict (1949–present): This conflict in Myanmar (Burma) between the government and the Karen National Union has been ongoing for over 70 years, making it one of the world's longest-running civil wars.
These conflicts highlight that while declared wars with clear start and end dates often last less than a decade, protracted insurgencies and civil wars can endure for generations.
